Here you will find books, events and articles that have been, or currently are, important for psychologists in Madrid as well as a small history of psychoanalysis in Madrid.

Psychoanalysis in Madrid

In order to understand the constitution of the psychoanalytically oriented societies and associations in Madrid that stem from Freud’s original conception ––we will mention three here: the APM, the IEPPM and SEPYPNA–– we must go back to the beginning of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), the largest psychoanalytical organization at the international level.

International Psychoanalytical Association

The IPA was officially founded, as such, in 1910 in the Nuremburg Congress by Freud and the first psychoanalysts of that time. Today the IPA is the world’s primary psychoanalytic accrediting and regulatory body, and it guarantees the high standards of its members’ training. It has members in about fifty countries, mostly in Europe, South America and North America.

Madrid Psychoanalytic Association

In 1981 the Madrid Psychoanalytic Association (APM in Spanish) was recognized by the IPA in the XXXII Helsinki Congress. The APM is represented both in Bilbao and in Valencia, and its headquarters are located in Madrid. All of its members belong to the IPA. Its goals are the promotion of the study, practice, training and research in psychoanalysis. Since its foundation, the APM has maintained and defended its theoretical pluralism that accommodates psychoanalysts of diverse theoretical orientations.

Institute of Psychosomatic Studies and Medical Psychotherapy

In 1962 the Institute of Psychosomatic Studies and Medical Psychotherapy (IEPPM in Spanish) was constituted as a scientific non-profit organization. An important section of its members belong to the APM, and thus to the IPA. It is a national association, with headquarters in Madrid, and delegations in Bilbao and Valencia. Its goals are to promote research and training in psychosomatic medicine, dynamic psychiatry and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy.

Spanish Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

In 1982 Spanish Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (SEPYPNA in Spanish) was constituted. It is a national association, with headquarters in Madrid, and delegations in Bilbao and la Coruña. An important section of its members belong to the APM, and thus to the IPA. Its fundamental goals are the development of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology and mental health. It is also involved in the improvement of the public mental health sector for children and adolescents.
