In the treatment of an adult, the patient is invited to say anything that crosses his or her mind even if it might seem irrelevant, absurd, incoherent, shaming, offensive or whatever the case may be. This specialized method of communication ––called free association–– will offer the therapist and the patient privileged access to observe the unknown aspects of the patient’s personality. Applying this information, the patient and the therapist will work together so that the former may gain emotional, and not only intellectual, comprehension of the deep roots of her or his distress. Endeavoring to understand what is occurring in all its complexity will afford the patient better possibilities to modify symptoms that were not understood before, and will increase the capacity to bring about the changes that the patient considers beneficial for his or her life.
